Pokemon Red Slot Machine

One of the unsung accomplishments in Pokemon Red and Blue was getting to the Celedon City Game Corner, grabbing the coin case, and playing the slot machines until you rack up the 9,999 coins. #123 Scyther: 5500 Coins (Red) A formidable Bug/Flying-type Pokemon with great Speed and Attack. Only found in the Red Version and in the Safari Zone, he's much easier to get with slots than randomly tossing balls at him and hoping for the best.

#NameBuySellNotes
0000Appears as a glitch item if forced to load. It is called '!j' in Red and Blue and 'x' in Yellow.
07?????00This item's name was dummied out. Appears to have been used for debugging purposes, as it allows you to surf without requiring a Pokémon or the necessary badge. It can also be used on Cycling Road without the usual 'Cycling is fun! Forget SURFing!' message. Additionally, while using this item, the music of the area updates normally. Attempting to use this item while facing land as you are surfing glitches the item name tile graphics and causes the game to freeze. Internally, it implements the effect of the Surf HM, unlike other HM moves, though it is similar to the out-of-battle effect of Dig, which is handled by using an Escape Rope.
08Safari Ball1000500While used, this item is unobtainable via normal means. Unlike in later generations, it is classified as a key item in Generation I.
09Pokédex0While used, this item is unobtainable via normal means. It can be used both during and outside of battle, opening the Pokédex. However, using it in battle causes the VRAM to load the overworld tileset, and turns the HP bar into letters.
15BoulderBadge00When used in battle, this item behaves like the Safari Zone 'Throw Bait' function. Outside of battle, this item performs the animation anyway, which also corrupts the music due to a different SFX set being loaded.
16CascadeBadge00When used in battle, this item behaves like the Safari Zone' 'Throw Rock' function. Outside of battle, this item performs the animation anyway, which also corrupts the music due to a different SFX set being loaded.
17ThunderBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
18RainbowBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
19SoulBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
1AMarshBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
1BVolcanoBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
1CEarthBadge00Attempting to use this item displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
2C?????00This item's name was dummied out. Attempting to use it displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.
32PP Up98004900An unused alternate version of the PP Up item, with the used one being at 0x4F. Unlike the regular PP Up, which has a buy and sell price of ¥0, this version is worth significantly more.
3BCoin105This item can be stacked in the inventory, but cannot be stored in a Coin Case, and attempting to use it displays Professor Oak's 'This isn't the time to use that!' message.

Elevator Floor Items

Following the list of item names, at offset 0x45B5 in the Japanese versions and 0x4A63 in the English ones is a list of the floor names used by elevators. These are stored in the same format as the item names. As a result they can be loaded as items, but lack valid effects, have a placeholder buy and sell price of 0, and freeze the game when used.

Untranslated Entries

Additionally, there are several curious unused text strings at offset 0x45F5 in the Japanese Red and Green. The same data can also be found at offset 0x4A92 in the English games. However, in the English games, these strings display as gibberish, as the character table is incompatible between the Japanese and English releases.

Curiously, the badge names are written バッヂ (baddzi) instead of バッジ (bajji), as in the final game. This may be due to how the 「ヂ」 and 「ジ」 had historically having different pronunciations, or (more particularly) the fact that they still do in a tiny number of Japanese dialects. Historically, 「ヂ」 sounded either like 'di', 'dzi' (pronounce the 'ds' at the end of an English word, and then add an 'ii' sound to it) or (approximately) 'dgi' (as in edge, badge), depending on dialect. And, historically, 「ジ」 sounded (approximately) like 'zhi' (as in massage, 'mirage', collage) The Hata and Tosa dialects (in the Kōchi prefecture), and the Kagoshima dialect maintain the distinction, but the modern 'official' Tokyo dialect has merged the two sounds together, with the actual realization of the merged pronunciation in the Tokyo dialect on a spectrum between 'dgi' and 'zhi' (from speaker to speaker). As such, in other words the original choice of 「バッヂ」 over 「バッジ」 may have to do with the fact that the 「ヂ」 kana historically was a more accurate rendering of English 'dg' into Japanese.

Alternate HMs Set

Pokemon Fire Red Slot Machine Odds

There exists a second set of HMs directly following the regular TMs which numbered TM51 through TM55. They behave like regular TMs, hence they can be stacked in the inventory, as well as sold at Poké Marts. Irrelevant data is interpreted as their price since the last price is defined for TM50.

Hidden Items

Deleted Map

There are coordinates for a hidden Max Elixer at coordinates (14,11) of deleted map 0x6F, for which there is no map data.

Game Corner

The hidden coin item on the ground directly three squares above the top-left slot machine on the cluster of machines that is the second from the east side is supposed to give you 40 coins. However, due to a typo in the routine that handles picking up hidden coins, only 20 coins are found instead.

Pokemon Red Slot Machine Prizes

Safari Zone Entrance

In certain areas around the Safari Zone entrance, using your Itemfinder causes it to tell you there is a hidden item nearby, which is unobtainable. The item is a Nugget located at the coordinates (10,1), thus preventing it to be obtained as it is set outside of the map boundaries, leaving said boundaries causing the game to crash. This suggests that the map was changed during development without the hidden item being removed, as hidden item data is separate from other map data.

Slot machines have been around for more than a century. They were invented by a Bavarian ex-pat in the late 19th century, they were briefly used as vending machines in the bars of North America, paying out food instead of coins, then quickly became the staple of the gambling industry. Since then, they have spread everywhere, from social networks to video games.
Slot machines are very popular all over the world - but not in Japan. Access to gambling in all forms except for betting on public sports, lotteries, and pachinko. There are no casinos in the country - people often play Mahjong for money, and there are a few popular rock-paper-scissors apps that many people play for money. Thus, it may come as a surprise that the games featured slot machine minigames up to Generation IV.

Slots in Pokémon

The slot machines in Pokémon games are a lot like their online counterparts at the JackpotCity online casino. The slots in Generation I games and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are a lot like the classic three-reel slot machines so popular at JackpotCity - even the symbols on the reels are inspired by the real thing. Plus, they borrow a popular feature from their real-life counterparts: by betting more coins per spin, you activate more pay lines, and with it, you boost the potential payouts of the game.
In Generation II games, the slot machines became simpler, with fewer symbols on the reels. But they come with an extra perk: Chansey. From time to time, the Pokémon thought to bring good luck and happiness to its owner, will appear to spin the reels with an egg bomb. In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the slot machine becomes more complex and similar to the real thing by adding a feature so popular at real-life gambling venues and online outlets like the JackpotCity: bonus games. The bonus games offer players bigger payouts and the chance to try the Reel Time (a bit like jackpots) with a potential to win big.And in the fourth-generation games, the slot machine once again becomes simpler, with a smaller jackpot but it gets a new bonus game. Triggered by winning the jackpot, the bonus game involves trying to keep a Pokémon happy by stopping the reels that it points at in the correct order.

Controversy

Playing slot machines in real life is permitted in most countries - even those that ban real-money gambling have carveouts for social games like MyVegas or Slotomania. Not in South Korea, apparently. Here, even the playful minigames inside Pokémon games have triggered the authorities. With gambling illegal in Korea, the slot machines in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum had to go. The problem is that without them, players couldn’t obtain TM64. As a workaround, the Game Corner receptionist will occasionally reward players with the item.
